Most popular wood color
When it comes to wood color for your custom shelving, walnut or medium brown is the top choice—warm, rich, and pairs perfectly with black pipe. It’s timeless, versatile, and highlights the natural grain without going too light or too dark.

Impact of wood color on shelf style: Light/Natural wood
Light/natural wood creates a clean, airy, and modern feel. It highlights the raw, organic feel—great for minimal or Scandinavian spaces.

Impact of wood color on shelf style: Medium brown/Walnut
Medium brown/walnut offers a warm, balanced, and classic look. It works with almost any style—industrial, farmhouse, or modern rustic and it is the most popular for a reason.

Impact of wood color on shelf style: Dark stains (Espresso/Black)
Dark stains (espresso/black) create a bold and dramatic effect. They add contrast and feel more refined or high-end, pairing well with modern or masculine spaces.

Impact of wood color on shelf style: Gray/Washed tones
Gray/washed tones create a soft, weathered, and coastal vibe. They lean more trendy or niche and are great for lofts or vintage-inspired interiors.
Common wood finishes & treatments
1. Oil-Based Stain (with Poly Topcoat)
Color Impact: Rich, deep color that enhances grain (e.g., walnut, espresso).
Durability: Very durable with added poly. Water- and scratch-resistant.
Best For: High-traffic areas, kitchens, commercial installs.
2. Water-Based Stain (with Poly)
Color Impact: More natural and subtle. Less yellowing over time.
Durability: Still strong, eco-friendly, fast-drying. Needs quality poly.
Best For: Clients who want a natural look and low VOCs.
3. Hardwax Oil (e.g., Rubio Monocoat, Osmo)
Color Impact: Soft, matte finish that highlights wood’s raw beauty.
Durability: Very durable, but needs reapplication over time.
Best For: Premium custom jobs, modern/organic styles.
4. Weathered or Reactive Stains
Color Impact: Creates aged gray or barnwood looks. More unpredictable.
Durability: Needs sealing—topcoat is essential for protection.
Best For: Statement pieces or rustic interiors.
Project spotlight: Walnut shelves in a historic Denver bungalow
A client in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood wanted floating shelves installed in their kitchen remodel—something that matched the original 1920s wood trim but still felt clean and updated.
We started with reclaimed pine boards and tested a few stain options on-site. The customer was torn between natural and a darker tone, but when we applied a walnut stain, it instantly clicked. It brought out the grain beautifully and matched their existing built-ins almost perfectly.
After sealing it with a satin poly finish, the shelves had just the right amount of sheen—rich, warm, and durable enough for everyday use.
The final install included three 48” shelves with black iron brackets. The dark pipe contrasted perfectly with the walnut tone, creating a warm industrial look that tied the whole kitchen together.
Customer feedback:
“I can’t stop looking at them. You nailed the color—we wanted something that felt original to the house but modern, and you delivered exactly that.”
